Rev. Al Sharpton brought the House of Justice to its feet at this week's Saturday Action Rally, stepping off the podium and into the crowd with fists raised all around him. It was a Saturday with a special tribute at its heart: Keshia Sutton James, granddaughter of the legendary Percy E. Sutton, came to Harlem to honor her grandfather ahead of the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1, a race he helped produce and bring to all five boroughs.
Pastor Alex Williams set the tone with the inspirational word before Rev. Sharpton took the podium for the keynote, bringing faith, leadership, and community together as we continue the work for justice and equality.
Percy E. Sutton was a civil rights attorney, Manhattan Borough President, broadcasting pioneer, and the man who saved the Apollo Theater. He was also one of the leaders who helped produce the New York City Marathon as we know it today, championing a race that runs through all five boroughs so that every community in this city could be part of it.
From the House of Justice podium, Keshia Sutton James reflected on what her grandfather built and the generations he lifted along the way. As runners take to the streets of New York on Sunday, November 1, the National Action Network family honors the vision of a Harlem giant whose work still carries this city forward.
Rev. Al Sharpton, from the House of Justice podium to the middle of the crowd, fists raised all around him.
From the House of Justice, Rev. Sharpton sent the room out with one assignment: do not wait for Election Day. Early voting in New York runs through Sunday, November 1, and the midterm election is Tuesday, November 3. Check your registration, find your early voting site, bring somebody with you, and vote like the Voting Rights Act depends on it. Because it does.
