On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), will lead a nonpartisan Voter Brigade alongside the Save America Movement (SAM) and bring the NAN AI Fluency Initiative to the Northwest Activities Center in Detroit. The event is open to the general public. Participants are asked to come ready to learn and to bring their own laptop.
A nonpartisan Voter Brigade, held by the National Action Network alongside the Save America Movement, will help Detroit residents register, confirm their registration status, and cast a ballot during Michigan's early voting period, followed by a hands-on AI Fluency Initiative class. The event is free and open to the general public.
Please note: Participants are asked to come ready to learn and to bring their own laptop to the AI Fluency Class. Anyone without a laptop is still welcome to attend.
Any Michigan resident not yet registered can still register in person at their city or township clerk's office with proof of residency, including on Election Day itself, and cast a ballot the same day until 8:00 PM. Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 3rd. Organizers will help attendees confirm that an existing registration is active and in the correct precinct, locate an early voting site, and walk anyone not yet registered through same-day registration.
The Voter Brigade is held alongside the Save America Movement, which organizes and trains volunteers to support and protect voters at the polls.
The work comes in a year that has tested the right to vote across the country, following the United States Supreme Court's decision to gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a ruling Rev. Sharpton has called “a bullet in the heart of the voting rights movement.” In August, NAN convened the March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote in Washington, D.C., alongside Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King.
The AI Fluency Initiative is NAN's original program, built and led by the organization to ensure that communities of color are full participants in the artificial intelligence economy. Each training runs as a working session rather than a lecture, meeting participants wherever they are in their AI understanding. From those who have never used AI, to those who use it every day, NAN's Fluency Program sends each attendee home with skills, resources, and real work they created during the session. The program is platform-agnostic, teaching foundational AI fluency that participants can apply in their businesses, their community organizing, their houses of worship, and their homes. Susan Hearn, NAN's Lead AI Fluency Strategist, leads the Initiative.
The program launched earlier this year at NAN Newark Tech World in Newark, New Jersey. It traveled to Houston in September, where Rev. Sharpton led “AI and Our Future” as part of NAN's “Next Mile” series, to The Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in Cleveland, to Chicago's South Side, and to the Bethel Family Life Center in Tallahassee. In each city participants have ranged from first-time users to experienced practitioners, and have left equipped to direct these tools toward their own goals.
“Black folks came to this city by the hundreds of thousands because there was a job on a line that paid enough to buy a house and send a child to school. Then the line got automated and not one person asked us what we thought about it. Artificial intelligence is the next line. This time we mean to be in the room while it is being built instead of reading afterward about what it did to us. Bring a laptop and come ready to work.”
