The Wealth Gap

The numbers tell a story words cannot soften. Median individual net worth in the United States lays the racial wealth gap bare, and it is exactly why the National Action Network fights for economic justice every day.

A Note From NAN

Why This Matters

A Black woman in America holds a median net worth of $15,000. A white man holds $189,230. That is more than twelve times the difference, and it did not happen by accident. Generations of redlining, wage discrimination, unequal access to credit, and barriers to homeownership built this gap, and only deliberate policy can close it.

Wealth is what lets a family weather an emergency, start a business, buy a home, and pass something on to the next generation. When that foundation is denied, the harm compounds year after year. Closing the wealth gap is not charity. It is justice, and it strengthens the whole country.
