Rev. Al Sharpton returned home to Brownsville, Brooklyn, the neighborhood that shaped him, to help Brownsville Community Baptist Church celebrate its 55th anniversary.
Standing behind the B.C.B.C. pulpit beneath the "King of Kings" banner, the National Action Network's President and Founder brought the Word and the memory of a movement that has always been rooted in the Black church. For Rev. Sharpton, Brownsville is more than a stop on a schedule. It is where the fire started.
The congregation rose to its feet as he preached, hands lifted, in a house that has stood with its community for more than half a century. Rev. Sharpton joined the church's pastor and members in honoring 55 years of faith, service, and perseverance, and in recommitting to the work that still lies ahead.
From the House of Justice to the pews of Brownsville, the message stays the same: faith and justice walk together, and the church remains the heartbeat of the movement.
